Glasgow Polytechnic Chess Club AGM 2018-2019

The minutes of the previous AGM 2017-18 were approved.

Dairena Gaffney gave a report of the events of this season. Ken Stewart's death was a great blow to the club. The Richardson cup was cut short due to dreadful weather in Aberdeen. Police had advised people not to travel.

Glasgow Chess League

Division 1 - Stepps A came first, whilst the Poly A were in seventh position. 10 teams competed.

Division 2 - Renfrewshire came first, whilst the Poly B were in sixth position. 10 teams competed.

Our C and D teams struggled. However, everyone enjoyed the games.

No promotion or relegation.

Dumbarton and District Division 2

Phones came first. Poly Bishops came in a respectful fourth place.

Treasurer's Report

Richard Hall thanked Alastair McIntyre (former treasurer) - in his absence -  for his time, help, and guidance in taking on the role of Treasurer.

Without taking the Quickplay into account, we were £3.60 in surplus. However, in the future, there could be additional expenses - the Richardson Cup, hiring a venue / travel, website costs, updating equipment.

New Membership Rates

Waged: £70

Retired: £50

Unwaged: £35

Junior: £15

GPCC Constitution

The new version was agreed. Hopefully it will be another 100 years before we need to do this again!

Centenary Celebration

Julien Papillon very kindly offered to make a commemorative stained glass window which could hang from the middle window at the Wellington.

Alex Marshall thought of a social evening – some analysis and a restaurant dinner. Other ideas were discussed including a fun tournament, publicity for the event - eg newspapers.

Presentation of Trophies

The Lyon Trophy

This year's Club Champion was Graeme King, presented with the Lyon Trophy.

The Macmartin and Thomson Trophies

The Macmartin Trophy ( best-performing U1600 player ), and the Thomson Trophy ( Player of the Year ) were presented to Craig Fay.

John Larkin gave a special mention to Danny Breslin’s excellent performance in both the Club Championship and as a player for the GCL A team. Danny won 6 out of 9 games. He played well above his grade of 1605 with a performance rating of 1764. Well done!

Many thanks to Scott Blackwell ( Quickplay Administrator ) and Andy Howie ( Arbiter ) in ensuring the success of the first Ken Stewart Quickplay.
