Tablet and iPhone versions for iOS13.1.2 now working. Changed back to original design.
Apart from some behind the scenes work, the website redesign is now finished. (I hope!)
The experience that you have of using the website will depend on the device that you use. If studying the history pages, you do not get the slideshow experience if you are using a mobile phone. This is intentional. The best experience is on desktop or tablet.
Why was the website designed this way? Because we care. We look after your mobile data. If you have many large images that are downloaded on a mobile device then it eats into your data, as well as slows down your page loading.
You should not have to wait for ages for your pages to load. Of course, there are many factors involved in your page loading experience, dealing with the network (servers), and so on. If the website was intended for international markets then of course the experience can be helped by using Cloudfare to help split and distribute your content.
The whole website is designed so that there can be three different pages for every "page". For example, the home page has a mobile page version, a tablet page version, and a desktop page version. Only the correct page version is downloaded to your device, so if using a smartphone, you are not downloading invisible large images in the background, which a lot of websites do, and so eat up your data, and you don't even get the desktop experience.
To prove what I say, yesterday I tested the home page using Googles PageSpeed Insight:-
This is an excellent rating for mobile.
And you can ask for better for the Desktop loading speed!
If you have been following my technical updates you will see that there is a lot more to websites than just having the correct image at the correct size.
Although hidden from view, we now have a members section, and a hidden committee section. This is part of the CMS.
Anyway enough on this. I have a game of chess to play!
Updated tablet and mobile versions of the home page.
Updated blogging system.
Contacts pages for Desktop and Tablet redesigned.
New Solution for Calendar problem. Can swap between two versions to show the relevant September. In the present case September 2018 and the September 2019.
SEO - Search Engine Optimisation
Tinkering under the hood. Improved page load speeds. Mobile getting 90/100 - which is excellent. Desktop - for first time - getting score of 100/100.
Redesigning the look of the website. Still to complete this.
Changed fonts on all pages.
Changed home page to make it easier to access Calendar.
Now, only a small section of the home page needs to be converted to CMS - bottom menu items. The website content can now be updated by members that are able to use a text editor. The content can be updated on a phone, tablet or desktop computer from any place in the world!
Mobile phone - landscape view
I have disabled the use of viewing our website in landscape when using a mobile phone. The landscape phone experience was poor. I may come back to this when I have much more time to concentrate on this aspect.
Updated footer icons - changed from FontAwesome to SVG files that I created. This gives a page speed boost. (23rd June 2019). All of the content of the footer can now be updated via the CMS.
Using different devices
Viewing the website on a phone will be a different experience from viewing it on a desktop or tablet computer. You may see different images, and different content. For example, there will be more content on the desktop computer for the history page.
I have created a range of SVG icons and more will be added when time allows.
Why change the existing icons?
1 SVGs will look sharp on any device.
2 They are usually small is size. The page loads faster.
3 The Font Awesome icons require HTML code - whilst I or other Council memebers, can use markdown to insert SVGs into new content.
SEO Technical note:
Only for real web geeks.
Canonical urls added to all main pages! This is not for mortals to see any effect. It is to help Google understand our blog page. For D - this is an example of under-the-hood changes!
