Online Chess Tournaments - Update 1 - Rapid1 tournament test

Given the strange times that we are living in what is the way forward? I think that we need some engaging distractions to get us through these times. How am I and others to survive a twelve week detention order? Surely our chess will improve when we have all this time to study the game?

Some of the club members have suggested online chess. I think that this is a great idea. I am a member of chess.com and already play some other members of our club in online games. There is a Basic membership - which is limited - but is free. I have a Diamond membership which does allow one to set up tournaments.

(Please note that I am not advocating any particular chess business over any other. It may be that there are better ones out there. If you think so, then let me know.)

It would be good if Polytechnic members could let me know if you arleady have a chess.com membership and would like to participate in online tournaments.

Last night I temporarily set up a 5 round swiss rapid 15 min/ game tournament - just to see if it was possible. It was. This might be a way forward as a substitute for the Ken Stewart Quickplay?

Craig A has suggested a six round Swiss competition with matches played every fortnight. Sounds good to me. That would take me up to the end of my compulsory detention period.

Is it fair that I have been imprisoned and not (yet) convicted of any crime? But these are not fair times.

On a more serious note, and I am sure that I speak for all of the Council, we wish you all good health and look forward to when we can resume our normal club activities.

Again - if you are interested in the idea of online tournaments, or have any other suggestions, please let me know.

If you want to participate in a test of a 3 round Swiss 15 min 0 inc Rapid tournament, then let me know your handle on chess.com, and I will enroll you as a member of "Glasgow Polytechnic" club on chess.com, after you accept the invite, and then you should try to JOIN the tournament called "Rapid1" on the Upcoming Swiss Tournaments. This has to be done before 7.30pm tonight. I think the JOIN button becomes available 1 hour before the tournament begins.

I hope this works. Andy
